Why Do Pipes Burst?

If you had to list the most common reasons for pipes bursting, right now you would have quite the list. Without a doubt, the most common reason for a pipe bursting is excess pressure. It can come from a large water leak, a burst pipe or even clogged pressure relief. Pipes and faucets can clog with grease, hair, dirt and food particles if they are not cleaned on a regular basis. Pipes that are used frequently for washing clothes and dishes also tend to develop problems because of the friction caused by hot appliances and washing machines and the heat that is generated as a result can cause the seal to weaken. It is a good idea to check your pipes often especially during the seasons when you plan to be gone on vacation.

Cold weather also causes considerable pressure build up against cold water pipes. This often occurs in homes where people attempt to warm the water before they turn on the tap. When the temperature outside dips below freezing, the flow of cold water is greatly reduced and this creates a pressure build up against the cold water supply, which in turn can damage both the cold water supply and the pressure relief.

Damage from cold air can usually be remedied by adding insulation to the pipe. However, sometimes it becomes difficult to add insulation because cold air tends to penetrate the most fragile of structures such as copper piping. When this occurs, pipe bursting becomes imminent. Therefore, it is important to repair any damaged water lines as quickly as possible.

Sometimes, the problem is a leak in one component of your water system, such as the water pressure feeder. When this happens, the pressure will build up until there is inadequate water pressure to keep the plumbing running smoothly. As the water pressure builds, the pipes will become pressurized and break. Occasionally, a burst pipe may occur when excess water pressure is created due to leakage in one pipe. As water freezes, it expands and will force small leaks through the piping.

Even though this is less common than a complete break, it is still possible. When the freeze thaw cycle within a plumbing system reaches its optimum, expansion will occur in the pipes. When enough pressure is developed, the pipe bursts as it tries to expand against the expanding pressure. In other words, when the pipes are compressed too much by the freeze-thaw cycle, they will burst.

Another cause for some pipes bursting is a lack of insulating material. It is not uncommon for older homes to use mineral or granular products to insulate the pipes against freezing and thawing temperatures. Unfortunately, the granules or sealants deteriorate with time and can no longer prevent pressure buildup between the piping and the walls.

Finally, cracks in the piping can also allow water to escape through them. When this occurs, there is a significant increase in the potential for piping bursting. If an individual flushes a toilet and then notices a small hole in the wall, it could be a sign of a bursting pipe. Sometimes cracks go unnoticed until someone trips on a hidden drain hole and has a shower fall onto it. It is important to prevent pipes from bursting in your home by fixing any problems that you notice.

If you have noticed that your water pipe bursts, there are some options available to repair the damage. One of the most popular choices is to replace the entire plumbing system. In order to protect yourself from the risks of this procedure, it is necessary to fix any water pipe breaks that you observe. This will most likely involve hiring professional help. If you do not know who to call, try going online for help. There are local plumbers to help with blocked drains, even hot water in Canberra if that is what you need. When a plumber replaces your pipes, he will make sure that the structure is stable and to keep any underlying damage from occurring. If you don't want to pay to fix your pipes, you might consider insulating your home in order to decrease the risk of burst pipes.
